Ask Life About Your Purpose

I think life’s purpose is to live fully each day with the things you love.     Lois DeCew

No one can get inner peace by pouncing on it.    Harry Emerson Fosdick

I just listened to Eckhart Tolle say something profound.  I suppose most of what he says ranks as noteworthy.  However, this really struck me today.  His comment was that we often ask ourselves the question, “What is my purpose in life?  He then said maybe that’s the wrong question.  Instead, ask life what purpose it has for you.

For some that may seem obvious.  Not so for me.  I have been on a mission to “find myself.”  I have read self help books, listened to meditations, watched Oprah, and much of the same scripture came through, find your purpose in life and all will be well.  Isn’t that just great.  What if I don’t know my purpose?  Then what? Besides every time I asked myself to figure out my purpose I couldn’t just pick one.  I have multiple purposes.

It’s my inability to see in black and white.  I’m a grey person although I prefer to think of it as multi-colored.  I can’t just pick one thing and say, “Aha, that’s what I’ve been waiting to do all my life.”  It just doesn’t work that way for me.  I find one thing that I think might be my purpose and then turn around and think of something else and how fulfilling that could be and I’m off again not knowing what I am really meant to do.

So to hear Tolle say to ask life made some sense to me.  It allowed me to accept my inability to pick just one thing.  It said to me that we don’t have to be the designers. We can ask for some advice. He says it helps to invite moments of stillness without mind chatter and through that stillness will come an answer.  He even said he waited several years before the answer came to him.

Again let me say that this is probably not so profound to everyone but I am certainly glad I heard this today.  I can relax a little.  Whew!
